An extraordinary and evocative example of late Victorian devotional jewellery, this sterling silver necklace dates to the year 1900 and encapsulates the spiritual and artistic sentiments of the era. The centrepiece is a substantial oval plaque, finely cast in soft relief with five serene cherubic faces, beautifully detailed, symbolising purity, divine protection, wisdom and guidance. Cherubs signify the celestial bridge between Heaven and Earth.
The medallion is framed by an ornate foliate and floral border. A smaller central floral connector plaque, also hallmarked with the lion passant, links the main pendant to a Prince of Wales chain.
This chain, measuring 24 inches in length, lacks a clasp in typical Edwardian-Victorian fashion, intended to slip easily over the head. Every detail hints to the sentimental symbolism worn close to the heart in the 19th century.
