Captain John Woodburn
A fine portrait of the young Captain John Woodburn of the 44th Bengal Native Infantry. Within the original swept, grain-painted 'Rosewood' frame. Captain John Woodburn was born at Dalmellington, Ayr, Scotland on the 4th April 1803. He was murdered in Sydabad fort on the 15th November 1841 when leading a party of invalids from Ghazni to Kabul when under attack from an overpowering number of Ghilzie insurgents. His memorial tablet in the Church of St. John the Evangelist, Edinburgh further records that he was also Commandant of the 5th Disciplined Hindostanee Regiment of Infantry at the time of his death.
