Victorian 15 Carat Gold Horseshoe And Buckle Cuff
Really cool Victorian hinged cuff, the front decorated with a gold horseshoe set with pave turquoises and 'strapped onto' the cuff with two gold belt buckles. Buckle jewellery became quite popular in the 19th century, during the Victorian Era. The belt/buckle represents eternity, fidelity/loyalty, strength and protection. The symbol curves around and threads back onto itself, creating an eternal loop. During the Victorian era, the horseshoe was most commonly associated with good fortune. It was widely believed that hanging a horseshoe above a doorway or wearing one as jewellery could bring luck and offer protection to its owner. This belief was rooted in ancient superstitions, as the horseshoe was thought to ward off evil spirits and repel negative energy. weighs - 18.78g Measures 6" inner circ. ( 5.7cm horizontal diameter and 4.4cm vertical diameter) Face width (north south) 24mm, back 10mm 15 carat gold English circa 1870 Good antique condition. Some tiny scratches to the gold which will polish out but I am wary of losing the mercury gild.
