GOLD SET WITH PIETRA DURA
An extra ordinary pietra dura set consisting of a necklace, bracelet, brooch, earrings and two buttons all set with pietra dura of pecrious stones like turquoise, agate and jasper all placed together precisely like a jigsaw to form floral scenes inlaid in oval black Belgium marble plaques in oval 20 carat gold mountings lusciously decorated with detailed filigrain with in between each oval two round, gold bottons with filigrain, in it original box. Pietra dura translates as hardstone which refers to a Florentine mosaic technique that is descendant from the Roman opus sectile mosaic style. In this technique, carefully sawn pieces of gemstones are fitted together like a jigsaw puzzle to form an image. The pietra dura technique blossomed during the Renaissance and revived in the 19th century.
