Austrian Romantic era substantial gold heart padlock with garnet
This Austrian heart padlock pendant from c.1830–1850 is crafted in solid 14k gold and set with a deep red cabochon garnet. Substantial in size and presence—larger than most heart padlocks of its type—it carries the traditional symbolism of “surrender to love.”
The body of the lock is domed and richly engraved with scrolling foliage, while the garnet glows at center like a pool of wine, framed by curling gold tendrils. Its tactile volume and layered ornamentation perfectly reflect the Romantic era’s devotion to nature-inspired motifs and sentiment.
The locking mechanism remains functional and closes securely. The reverse retains a glass panel, now soldered in place and no longer designed to open.
